Commemorating The Death of Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard, died 21st July 1796 in Dumfries.
SUNDAY, 19 JULY 2009
Traffic alert notified to everyone participating as Ayr Burns Club Tribute Day is sharing today with the Open Golf Championship Final Day at Turnberry down the road,
Like William Burness and his family, Ayr Burns Club members, will join the Morning Church Service Congregation and the citizens of Ayr to worship in
this Kirk built in 1654. (www.Auldkirk.org)
As a boy, Robert Burns with his father, after walking from New Gardens,
Alloway and Mount Oliphant Farm, sat on one of the “furms” set in the body
of the church for the Burrowfield and Alloway folk.
Downstairs on the right hand side front pews, facing the Pulpit.
As a Communicant Member of this Kirk, under the influence of his father, William Burness, who was an Elder and later the Auld Kirk of Ayr’s Elder to the Presbytery of Ayr, Robert Burns, the baby, the boy and the young man was greatly influenced during his formative years spent here, in the Parish of Ayr.
The Burness Family read their Family Bible daily, as Robert recorded in the poem, “The Cotters Saturday Night”.
Robert Burns, who was a MAN of FAITH, had inside knowledge of the “goings ons” within the Church of Scotland in the 18th Century.
